Founded in 1992, the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR) is a major international association promoting research and education in the fields of civil society, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector. ISTR is an organization committed to building a global community of scholars and interested others dedicated to the creation, discussion, and advancement of knowledge pertaining to the Third Sector and its impact on human and planetary well-being and development internationally. As an organization, ISTR is recognized and respected for its global vision, its commitment to excellence, its collaborative approach, and the values of diversity and pluralism with which it pursues its mission.

ISTR is the largest international organization for research on civil society, philanthropy, volunteering and non-profits. In 2018, 1000 participants from all over the world will come to Amsterdam to present their research to each other and to Dutch practitioners and policymakers.

It is the first time the Netherlands organizes this conference; previously Cape Town, Toronto, Bangkok and Stockholm were hosting cities. In comparison to many other countries, the Netherlands has a large civil society with a rich philanthropic past. The conference offers an  unique opportunity to highlight this aspect of Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The Netherlands also harbors high-qualified research with international allure in the field of civil society, philanthropy and volunteering.

he congress aims at: 1. To promote The Netherlands as philanthropic country with the largest non-profit sector (including a growing sector philanthropy) in the world;   2. To highlight the Dutch research tradition with international allure in the field of philanthropy and volunteering  (Giving in the Netherlands / Giving Europe / Global Giving); 3. To connect science, practice and policy  (Open Access and Responsible Research and Innovation).
